Rubaiyat

-Purveyors of Quality Handcrafts-

Throughout the ages, it has been the crafts of all cultures that have told the story of spiritual and material growth.

And, throughout the past two decades, it has been Rubaiyat that has been Calgary's link to the heartbeat of these cultures. Owners David and Pamela Haight are dedicated supporters of some of the world's finest craftsmen. Rubaiyat "uniquities" (a term coined by a friend of the Haights to describe their extraordinary collection of artifacts) emphasize things made by hand.

Jewellery was, and still is, one indication of wealth. One supplier to Rubaiyat has travelled extensively to accumulate North America's largest collection of old-world beads. Many of these are reworked into new designs, eventually making their way to Rubaiyat as contemporary heirlooms. At the other end of the spectrum are craftsmen working with titanium and niobium. These space-age metals are crafted into lightweight colourful jewellery that is a pleasure to wear.

Art glass has been enjoying a renaissance since that turn of the century. Rubaiyat is proud to have been part of the growing community of Canadian artisans who produce this off-hand blown glass. The striking colours of this glass and its slight imperfections make them wonderful conversation pieces in any decor.

Ceramic urns are a mainstay feature at Rubaiyat. The popular oversize vases must be sought out from artisans in other countries who use huge walk-in kilns carved out of a hillside. They are crafted using all the old methods, and then carefully brought to Canada.

Rubaiyat's other uniquities include wood, textiles, leather and furniture. "We enjoy seeking out the unusual wares of craftsmen everywhere. As often as not, many seek us out," smiles David. This infusion of changing inventory is one reason for Rubaiyat's loyal customer following. "We're selling to third generation customers-the grandchildren of clients who discovered us 20 years ago."

This connection with regular patrons often takes into account their sometimes eclectic tastes. When adventures in little-known areas of the globe unearth a prized item, the Haights make sure to bring it home since they know it will please a certain customer.

Both David and Pamela, and their knowledgeable family of staff, are sincerely interested in people - whether it's the craftsmen who create the artifacts of today, or the people who enjoy them.
